Description:
Lett + Sweetland were appointed as executive/design and build architects for this project.
The Museum houses a unique collection of working pumping engines housed in the original Hereford Water Pumping Station. This building is a scheduled monument, and the Museum is classified by English Heritage as a site of clear national importance. The extension provides a visitor centre, education centre, engine gallery, maintenance workshops and toilet facilities.
In order to get the previously approved scheme within the client’s budget, all aspects of the scheme were subjected to a process of rigorous value engineering and redesign involving the design team and the contractor. As a result of this process the overall floor area and salient features of the scheme were able to be retained.
The end result is a simple, modern industrial building, which contrasts with the Victorian scheduled monument and allows the historic structure to be seen through the new extension whilst providing an appropriate environment for the working machinery.
The extension was opened on 25th June 2006 by Sir Neil Cossons OBE Chairman of English Heritage.
