WALL STREET HEREFORD
Client: Shaftesbury Society in association with Herefordshire Health Authority
and Hereford and Worcester Social Services
Completed:1990
Contract Value: £1.2M
Description:
A scheme for a hostel and flats for younger, physically handicapped people. An inner city site was preferred over a suburban green field option in order to give occupants good access to the facilities of central Hereford.
However, the chosen site was very limited in area, bounded by other buildings and on the remains of the ancient city walls ramparts. The scheme aimed to give the maximum independence to occupiers. As much accommodation as possible was located at ground level.
The hostel element is broken down into groups of flatlets, each flat responding to the site and being unique in plan, and with its own external door option. The common room and courtyard were designed to promote communal living and activities.
Undertaken as directors of Glazzard Architects Co-operative.
