THE GRANGE SCHOOL - NEW TEACHING FACILITIES
Client: Royal Grammar School
Completed: 2004
Contractor: Speller-Metcalfe Ltd
Contract Value: £3,050,000
Description:
A 16 classroom school with specialist teaching areas and IT suite, library, and music, with a dining hall, sports hall, kitchen, changing rooms, administration and staff facilities. The design aims to maximise natural light and ventilation to teaching areas with a 2-storey central atrium street to bring light and ventilation to the central circulation space.
Planning Approval was granted in late 2002 for the new school in the Green Belt outside Worcester in the grounds of the School's existing nursery and infant school. The construction period was from March 2003 to March 2004.
Design issues which have influenced the design are:
To provide a bright and welcoming entrance foyer space directly linked to the existing and new school.
To arrange classrooms in year group clusters with localised cloakroom and toilet facilities.
To create sheltered external teaching spaces with maximum access to outside from classrooms with extensive landscaping.
To create a visually dynamic central street linking classrooms and levels.
To provide a flexible hall space capable of being simultaneously the dining hall and P E hall or combined into one large space for performances etc, and incorporating a gallery for additional possibilities.
To create light, airy, well ventilated and acoustically good teaching areas.
The school has been designed as a low energy building:
Classrooms arranged on a north-south axis to minimise solar heat gain.
Classrooms designed to be naturally lit and ventilated (maximum classroom depth of 6m with additional light and ventilation at the back of classrooms by using the central atrium / street).
The building envelope has a high thermal mass coupled with high insulation levels (much of the external wall area is externally insulated).
Automatically operated natural / passive ventilation system.
A compact building form with a low perimeter/area ratio.
